Revisiting 42: Virasat’s Role
Exploring collective memory of the 1942 Quit India Movement
Virasat Art Publication played a pivotal role in conceptualizing and organizing the “Revisiting 42” series of events during 2017-2018, commemorating the 75th anniversary of the historic Quit India Movement of 1942.
As the primary organizing force, Virasat curated a unique blend of exhibitions, academic seminars, and cultural programs across multiple venues in West Bengal.
Working in collaboration with groups like Reflection of Another Day (RAD), a collective of contemporary painters and artists, and Ayatakhetra, a Bengali journal, Virasat brought together over 20 distinguished collectors who showcased rare Swadeshi goods and artifacts from India’s pre-Independence era (1905-1947) at ICCR Kolkata.
Through these meticulously curated exhibitions, Virasat created an immersive historical experience, displaying everyday items that were symbols of India’s struggle for self-reliance. These included locally-made pressure cookers and matchboxes bearing portraits of freedom fighters, porcelain household goods, cinema booklets, and books studied by freedom fighters in jails.
Each event featured academic discussions and seminars that contextualized these artifacts within the broader narrative of India’s freedom movement.
The series successfully bridged the past and present, offering contemporary audiences a tangible connection to the spirit of 1942 and the Swadeshi movement, while fostering important academic discourse on this crucial period in Indian history.
